Every parent wants their child to be safe, to feel safe, and to have a joyful and unfettered childhood. Our decision to volunteer overseas for three years and to live in the context of Colombia’s pain and conflict makes that no less true for Greg and I. Clearly we are making the radical choices to have our own eyes more deeply opened to injustice and suffering there and to live in solidarity with displaced people. We know that this exposure will have sweeping impact for Caleb and Ascher. We know that the generosity, ingenuity, resilience, courage and joy of our Colombian friends, neighbors, and colleagues will too. As people of faith and hope, we’re entrusting ourselves and our kids to the promise that Light is greater than darkness and that all we need (to preserve our safety and our joy) will be granted us.
